To the farming community of Sri Lanka! Baurs stands by you-we are in this together!

Open Letter to the farming community in Sri Lanka
Colombo, Monday, 17 May 2021

Dear all farming community in Sri Lanka, Ayubowan / Vanakkam!

On Thursday 22nd April news broke the first time that the Government of Sri Lanka will ban chemical fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides with immediate effect.

For 124 years, Baurs has been at the forefront of fertilizer and plant protection! Our founding company name ‘The Ceylon Manure Works’ is paying tribute to the fact that our business originated in organic manures as well as chemical fertilizers, combining the old and the new.

Today, Baurs Fertilizer Factory, passionately still called ‘CMW’ in internal communication, is one of the most modern and high-tech Fertilizer Factories in South-East Asia.

Our pioneering spirit never left us and the hunger for innovation drove us to explore organic fertilizer for a long time. We have been assessing products from international as well as domestic markets. Our research included cooperation with large local dairy and poultry farms, compost exploitation and even on converting sludge or biochar into organic fertilizer. Given the high subsidy on chemical fertilizer and the lower productivity on organic fertilizer (not subsidized) never allowed us to develop and implement a commercial business plan for organic.

With the recent announcement by the government to ban chemical fertilizer, we will intensify the research and activities of all our options, to serve you with excellence and performance, as we have been doing for the last 124 years.

We are in this together and we will find solutions to grow and protect your plants and harvest.

Yours sincerely,
Rolf Blaser
